L.A. to San Diego

Yesterday we spent the day with our dear friend Donny and some old and new friends (everyone happened to be an Ohio native) in Los Angeles. We went to a couple different places for cocktails. We had a great time and got up early (yet slowly) this morning and had some breakfast and headed to San Diego to Donny's place. Which is incredibly beautiful located in the Northpark neighborhood. We showered and hung out at his place lazily laying in a pillow pile on the floor and watched James Bond for a bit then went to the beach had a couple cocktails, walked around on the shore, went to the market and came back and Donny grilled a fabulous meal.. we are leaving soon to go to the Soda Bar for the show!

lazy saturday morning in Long Beach

Last night the show at Viento Y Agua was nice the other acts were cute and breezy. It was nice to sit inside and down ice waters and iced coffee's after sitting in terrible L.A. rushhour traffic in the hot hot heat. As soon as we got to Long Beach we jumped in the ocean to cool off. We met Courtney last night, a friend of a friend from back in Ohio. Her and her roommates were kind enough to let us crash on an a mattress made of air in the living room. We have spent the morning showering, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes in the back yard. I threw some darts and thought of Macklin and Wednesday nights in Tremont. We are meeting up with Donny soon who wants to take us out and show us a goodtime in the city of angels.

hair blowin' in the hot wind, time hangin' from a clothes pin

We spent yesterday cruising down hwy 1.. we stopped off in Santa Cruz and Capitola and spent the afternoon with Aaron who rode with us sixty or so miles. For those of you who have driven down the coast you know how beautiful hwy 1 is, but I am here to tell you it is different on the bike, instead of viewing the scenery you become a part of it. It is elemental. We spent my birthday evening in Big Sur we camped right on the pacific. And we had an amazing time and didn't have to spend a dime thanks to the kindness of strangers.. We awoke this morning early and had coffee at our tent (provided again by the kindness of strangers) and hit the road, we have some miles to make today, we are going to Long Beach. I hope we get there in good time because I'm just dying to get in that ocean!

On another note Joey left his cell phone on the curb outside a Chevron about 150 miles north of San Francisco.. so if you have been trying to reach him forget it you will have to call me instead.. If you don't have my number just email me @ ilikethatbike@gmail.com

Avenue of the Giants and driving through a Golden Gate cloud

We arrived in San Francisco yesterday around six.. Crossing the bridge was thick with fog. We literally drove over the Golden Gate Bridge into a cloud. It was cold but beautiful. We spent the evening with Trish and Aaron wandering around the city, riding the subway and bus and having a couple drinks. This morning we got to shower (which is great) and had coffee, fresh juice (thank you Todd and Marco) breakfast (thank you Trish) and now we are about to take off and Aaron who also rides is going to ride along with us 50 or so miles. So we are happy about that for sure. We are headed to Big Sur where I want to see some whales for my birthday and also hope to visit the Henry Miller library! I wish I had more time at a computer to fix and label this blog. I promise I will do it as soon as I can spend a little more time..

Yesterday we drove from the Redwoods down the 101 and it was a pretty drive through the Avenue of the Giants, I love driving through the tall trees. It was Joey's first time in the Redwoods and he really loved it.

We were in Portland on Sunday and I was really sad to have missed ZooBomb.. we were late and turned around.. but we had a great time while we were visiting Amy and Dusty.

more soon, I promise..

much, much peace and love

Day Ten?

Day 2 in Seattle and we are happy.

We got here yesterday afternoon and have been spending time with our dear friend Al and our new friend Sarah. They have been incredibly kind and hospitable to us and we have been having a great time. We are at Mr. Spots Chai House and Joey is playing some songs and I have been trying to get the photos off of my phone onto the computer so I can post photos, videos etc... But suprise, suprise it isn't working. I hope to fix the problem and get back to it soon.

Seattle has been great, like I believe I have already said. Yesterday was incredible and beautiful the drive into the city. That whole last stretch through Snoqualmie ridge is just breathtaking. It has been one great destination after another for us and we are just feeling relaxed and blessed to be somewhere new and beautiful each day.

I wanted to touch on a little bit from the first few days of our trip when I was unable to post.
Day one driving to Chicago was exciting, we hung out at the Hideout for a little bit before meeting up with our lovely friend and hostess for the night Rachael. We went and grabbed a slice of Chicago pizza down the block from her apt. Then headed back to the Hideout and caught up with friends of ours who live in the area. Christina and Matthew, Brian and Joy and of course the always refreshing Crazy Kent Seaver. We had a great time and spent the next afternoon walking around the city had our coffee and breakfast accross the street at the Gallery Cafe. Where I had the Kahlo, a spicy breakfast burrito and Joey had the Manet which he pronounced 'Man- net' and got some quips from the barista behind the counter. We vistited the bookstores and the bike shops in Wicker Park before packing up the bike and heading out.

The ride to Madison was nice, we took back roads and took our time, when we got to Madison it took us far to long to find the venue which is so properly named area 51.
The show was a very ecclectic mix of acts. We met Steve and Stacey there who invited us to crash on their couch. After the show we all rode (they too on a motorcycle) to a little rural dive called Beck's in Oregon, WI about 15 miles out of Madison. We met a character named Showtime who was Steve's best friend and he had a knife that I believe he mentioned he bought off of an infomercial and spent half an hour cutting quarters in half and cutting the edge off of dimes. I want to go more into Steve and Showtime and Patches and the CC Riders but I promised I would let Joey tell that story. I will talk about Steve and Stacey's family a little bit though.

We awoke Saturday morning to coffee and french toast and got to meet their children. Mikey, Sariah and Murphy.. We were both amazed at how amazingly well behaved these kids were. Joey played some songs for everyone, we sat around and got to know eachother a bit, looked at photos, told stories, got into a bit of a water fight to cool down and had a light lunch before we took off.

We were sad to leave, and will keep in touch with them and hopefully reconnect again soon.

Tonight we are going to a house party in Capital Hill to play and drink and hang out and have a great time because tomorrow morning we hop on the bike again and head for Portland!

Ok, I'm afraid that is all the time I have for now to update but I will do what I can to get you the rest of the photos soon.

much peace and love

From Madison to Montana

Joey and Wendy sent these photos over the last several days. Everything is out of order but there are some great shots. I will let Wendy edit in captions for the posts. Unfortunately...I lost the best photo of the lot...Joey feeding beer to a buffalo at the side of the road. Very disappointing. I am sure no one will have any trouble envisioning the scene but I will draw a picture and post it up if I can find my crayolas

Photos from the road...

We went from Wyoming to Paradise Valley

I know some of you are curious about what happened in Wyoming so I will fill you in..

We arrived in Wyoming Tuesday afternoon after leaving the Badlands and riding through the beautiful Black Hills. We were looking for a truck stop or diner to plug in and stretch our legs a bit. We met a guy and his uncle on their bikes outside of Newcastle and they rode with us until we got to Gillete to a flying J then they took off.. After that it was all down hill, the folk in Wyoming wanted nothing to do with us.. everyone was harsh and rude and we just wanted to get out of the state completely.. We found a rest stop in Powder River and sent up our tent, we figured we would just catch a few quick hours and take off.. we weren't sure it was too safe.. I think we were just taken aback by all of the rude locals it made us uneasy. Then next thing you know the owner of the motel at the rest stop comes stumbling around the corner ( We were plugged into a couple outlets in front of his motel bar ) He appeared to have been drinking or some sort of recreational stimulant.. he was peering in the windows telling us about how his girlfriend left her purse inside with all the keys, weird.. ok, we didn't know what to do but he told us to feel free to set up our tent and then he hopped in a car that was unlocked and had keys in it and rode off. So Joey set up the tent and I charged the phones at through top of the hill. Pat had told us that we were going to get rained on around five am so we planned to get out of there by four.. We woke up at two to buckets of rain and wind so hard it was ready to roll the tent away with us in it! ( Joey never staked the tent, he said its unnecessary. I usually do it but I didn't help set up the tent that night ) Needless to say I told you so Joey!
So we had to jump out grab all of our important stuff and ride up this dirt (now mud) hill and to the rest stop where there was shelter. We dropped all that stuff off and put on our rain gear (which if you want a mental image makes me look like a big long burnt marshmallow! ) We went back down the hill packed the tent then back up the hill to pack the bike up secure everything and tarp it ( thank you Stacey for giving us that tarp and the clear's which have really been coming in handy! )
So we take off and the next town is Buffalo and it is forty miles away. So here we are in the dark dark Wyoming hills on the bike in the rain on a one lane highway with construction happening. It was a blur really. When we reached Buffalo at three thirty ish nothing was open except one gas station, so we roll in dry off and sit there until six. Joey talked to the guy attending who said to expect snow in the mountainside where we were headed which we did not have the gear for. We were really freaked out.
So we went to a diner that had opened at six and had breakfast and tried to figure out what we were going to do. By seven we felt defeated and frusterated and decided to be safe and head south and go west through Salt Lake towards San Francisco. We were heartbroken about having to skip Seattle, Olympia & Portland, but the guy at the gas station made us feel like we were about to do a really dumb thing..
Luckily two guys started talking to us out front of the diner and we told them about the trip and about how we might just turn around and go south and they talked us out of it basically. They assured us that we would be just fine and the ride was so beautiful we just had to do it. So we did.. thank goodness there were two awesome people in the state of Wyoming or else I could be blogging from a McDonalds in Casper instead of being in Paradise Valley in beautiful southwest Montana!

So we went from Buffalo to Sheridan Wyoming where I begged Joey to pull into a city park so I could nap. So I napped in the sleeping bag in my full rain gear with helmet and all.. I was totally exhausted to say the least.
After that we got up to Montana and the ride was beautiful. We stopped at the Custer and Sitting Bull museum where the battle of little bighorn began. That seemed very sad to me. And we met an old Native American who had no teeth but boasted he was the nicest man on the Crow Indian Reservation. And as far as we were concerned he was. He told us he was off to watch Ali fight, he said Ali was the best prize fighter but he would be too scared to hang out with him. We thought that was cute..
So we found camping last night in the most beautiful area. Paradise Valley it's called. Basically we just went down a fishing access road and sent up camp right on the gorgeous Yellowstone River nestled between the majestic Gallatin and Absaroka mountain ranges..
the whole scene was unreal, we had a campfire and watched the river and the sunset behind the mountains then star gazed for a bit the whole bit. Joey played his guitar for a bit then we turned in.

As soon as we tucked in we started hearing noises, I think he had to get out of the tent three times before I finally fell asleep. Fear was no match for my exhaustion. Joey told me he had to stuff tissues in his ears so the noises of the wild wouldn't freak him out!

We are about to roll on out now we are headed for the Rocky Mountains and the sun is out it is cold but a beautiful day.

day six

Last night we camped in the badlands it was incredible. It was peaceful and beautiful and we survived so I will just omit the part about the spider the snake the bats and the bobcat, because I got away with only one small spider bite on my thumb, it could have been worse!

There was a buffalo, or bison whatever you prefer and a cow who were 50 feet from our tent (behind a fence, just in case) and they were great we got to hang out with them.. We built a campfire and drank a few beers and watched as authentic tumbleweeds blew around.. not quite the Ohio tumbleweeds we were used to seeing (i.e. plastic grocery bags).

This morning we woke up early which we have been doing throughout the trip without trouble. I guess it has to do with the fact that as soon the sun comes up you almost suffocate in a tent also could be that two people one sleeping bag and no pillow is wildly uncomfortable!

So this morning I went to the cabin on site and tried to get on this sad excuse for a travel documenter and connect to the internet.. I had it for about five minutes so I didn't get much done. Although there was a little boy who was a self proclaimed yocal ? Is that how you spell it? Is that even a word? Anyhow he sat 2 tables away from me with this old rotary phone that he dismantled and turned into a rubber band slingshot and proceded to wage war with me he brought the reciever of the phone over and hooked it to my booth then returned to his seat and tinkered around for a bit until he started to make the phone ring and ring and ring until I finally picked up.
He said to me 'Hello, my enemy.. what kind of animals are in your army?'
I had no idea what he was talking about so I said giraffe's and he asked me how many lives a giraffe had, and told me his army was made up of cats because they have nine lives.. I thought that was pretty clever.
So we shot rubber bands at eachother for about half an hour then we took off.

Joey and I rode around the badlands for a bit then went off to the Black Hills. It was beautiful we had lunch in the forest with a view of Mt. Rushmore.. we drove around for a couple of hours in the Black Hills in Custer National Park it was hysterical because there was 'Wildlife at Large' and burro's and buffalo and antelope and goats and praire dogs and deer horses cows you name it just wandered all over the place crossing roads etc. Needless to say traffic moved quite slow through there. The burro's came right up to the bike looking for food.

But I have to run right now because we are in Wyoming, which has been a really weird experience so far and I think we are moving to a safer camp..

talk soon,
much peace and love

South Dakota

Last night we camped in Brookings, SD at Sexauer Park .. We had a nice little campfire and a couple of beers by a creek.. there were two other bikers camping last night from Ontario, en route to Devil's Tower. We just ran into them about fifteen minutes ago at a gas station in Pierre.

The stars last night were so beautiful and bright so incredibly clear the big dipper was so low it seemed as if we could climb a tree and touch one..

We left camp at nine am.. Stopped to eat lunch a hundred miles later in Huron. The drive today has been rough, the winds are very high and it has been flat flat prairie land until we got to Pierre 250 miles or so later now its gorgeous lush hills and valleys.. although on the prairie it was incredible to see a hundred or more miles of uncountable sunflowers.

We took photos today and they will be uploaded soon, right after I figure out a way to efficiently do so from my phone.. which by the way is very disappointing for documenting this trip it cant seem to stay on or keep charge and the signal is pretty weak pretty much everywhere in this
state. We are having coffee now downtown in Pierre which is a small but quaint capital city.

I am going to hop off the phone and pass to Joey so he can recap his first five days...

will talk soon..

p.s. definitely check out lovethelifeulead.blogspot.com it is Stacey and Steve's blog and they did a sweet piece about our visit complete with kind words, photos and video to come soon!

highway 61 revisited

Hi all, I'm sorry I haven't had too much time to post on here.. last night we camped on the Wisconsin Minnesota border at Leon Valley campground but didn't have any cell reception, also this fancy phone hasn't been holding a charge.. so I will give you a quick list of highlights thus far until I am able to properly post.

- Chicago was great, we stayed with the lovely Rachael and Meredith in the Wicker Park neighborhood which is my favorite part of the city..
We saw many old friends while we were at the Hideout. It was a fun show played with Coupleskate and the Lauraetes..

- Madison, when we arrived downtown we ate at a lovely little Indian restaraunt two blocks from the capital, then spent 2 hours searching for area 51, no kidding that was the name of the venue and its very appropriate. I will tell you now if you ever visit Madison, every other road is named Stoughton! It's very bizarre. The show was interesting. But I want to go into more detail soon about what happened after the show.. so stay tuned for that for sure.. also coming soon is tales from Sparta the bicycle capital and highway 61 and the Mississippi river ride!

Murphy's Law

So we thought we should update this here blog and let you know what we have ahead of us before we leave in 2 days!!

1. Pat won't be able to make the trip with us.
2. The bike is in the shop and the part we need won't be in until Wednesday...the day we leave!
3. We had a month's notice to move out of our apartment because it is about to undergo major renovations in 30 days! But we leave in 2 days and have only known for 7 days!
4. We have to find homes for all the cats!
5. The blackberry we ordered in order to update and document the trip on the blog wont be here in time! It will probably get shipped to Seattle so we can pick it up when we get out there.
6. Joey is finishing tracking, mixing and mastering the new record before the trip!
7. We have about 100 discs to burn and package before we leave!
8. I have to finish the cover for the new record 'Kids Songs'
9. We have to find storage for all of our belongings!
10. We have to pack and clean, clean, clean!

Murphy's Law at it's finest, but we are still moving forward and are excited and hopeful about our trip!

See you all on the road!

Love,
Wendy and Joey
